Wolfburn, First Release, Hand Crafted, Single Malt Scotch Whisky

700 ml, 46% abv, Scotland (Highland)

Released in mid 2016, the distillery’s first whisky, the standard expression, was simply called Wolfburn and was aged a minimum of three and a half years in used Islay quarter cask barrels. It’s this dram that has received considerable praise from a number of the whisky trade’s heavyweights (see awards in more info)

Distilled and bottled at Wolfburn Distillery, Thurso, Caithness, Highland region, 46% abv, non chill-filtered and not coloured.

Description

“Initially sweet with notes of fruit and fresh sea air. In the background you’ll find citrus freshness and hints of cereal, and just a trace of peat smoke. On the palate it’s sweet, nutty tones come to the fore, with hints of grapes and honey in the background. Floral flavours abound, enhanced with just a hint of coffee and dark chocolate. It is a lovely rounded whisky, which coats the palate to leave
just a trace of peat.” Shane Fraser, Distiller

Also…

The nose is bright and light with young orchard fruits (nectarine and pear), honeycomb, a whiff of sea salt, and a light suggestion of peat and mesquite smoke.

The palate has a present mouthfeel with the ethereal flavors from its quarter cask (peat & light smoke) giving way with air to flavors of saltwater taffy and heather with dried apricots on the finish.

This may be just over three years old, but it drinks beyond its years. (D&M tasting notes)

“For all its youth, the excellence of quality glimmers from the glass: a malt as beautifully flighted as a cricket ball delivered by the most crafted of spinners. It offers delightful turn on the palate, too.”Jim Murray, Whisky Bible 2017.
